Somerset, 2021

This photograph was the centrepiece of ‘Warning Signal’ - my exhibition at Shatwell Farm.

While it’s not the first image I made in the Somerset fields, I do think of it as the anchor in this body of work.

The only really static form, while all the others are in flux.

When hanging the show, curator Kendra Matchett chose it as the keystone around which we built the rest of the floating cloud composition in the Atcost barn.

The satisfaction I get from the elements of chance in making these images is the way I can surprise myself, shock myself, even scare myself. I still find this image terrifying two years after making it.

This headless figure embodies so many feelings I have about vulnerability, awe, and shame in the face of a furious Gaia.

Feelings about death, destruction and the disintegration of the planetary systems that, until now, have allowed Earth to be habitable for humans.

How will we survive here, after all that we’ve done to her?
